I was on Safari on my iPad and went to the page for the Independent when a message came up saying I had been hacked by the Syrian Independent Army!?
I quickly closed that tab, closed Safari and have switched off the iPad [now on iMac] but cannot understand what happened as thought the iPad was secure?
What do I do now?
will it affect iMac too?

I'm going to guess here that the page itself was hacked by a group. This happens (more and more as of late) on a variety of sites, none of which actually reside on your device.

And...I was indeed right (see here).

So my iPad is not affected? It is just the website? so I should have no problems with iPad?

That would be correct, it has "nothing" to do with your iPad.
