Ok well my boyfriend and I wanted to transfer files from PC to MAC so we can format the pc.

Anyway I was reading on the net how to get it all set up so I changed settings and what not and all the sudden the internet started working and at the same time iwas trying to connect to the pc and it worked.I don't remember reading anything about having to be connected to the internet while transfering files.Anyway I put more files into the shared folder and it wouldnt refresh, the internet disconnectedo n the mac and then i tried to connect again and error code 36 came up(which has previously comeu p before).SO do you have to be connected to the internet? The internet doesnt always work on the mac because we have dlink
=/.

Also ever since i've changed the settings, everytime I start up the mac,a question mac on a folder comes up and flashes, then a picture of a world comes up after it,but then the mac runs normally. The mac is my boyfriendsm um's computer and we weren't meant to be using it at all..But we did anyway because burning everything onto disctakes forever. Now all these problems have come up and we are fretting because she woill notice thosep ictures that come up when the mac starts up.IS there anyway to restore a mac?So then it will look like no one has been on the computer...Please help!!!Macs are so confusing!!

For your 2nd problem, click on System Preferences, when it opens click on Startup Disk. Click on the Hard Drive and click restart. It will then start up first in OSX every time. What has happened is somehow when you were settings things up it got set to try and boot from the Network first!

Hope that helps.

Internet, No. Network yes. Internet is what were on here talking. Network is computers connected together. Do you have the computers connected to a router? There has to be something that gives out IP address's whether it's Windows or Mac. How are you set up so I can better help you? How are the computers networked together and what do they plug into?

simply put an ethernet (could work with cross over not sure) cable from the pc to the mac and transfer the files. easier mac - mac as always but should work like that.

If it's a one-time thing and the network is really taking a lot of time to fix, just burn a DVD or two.

I know what a network and the internet is lol but it seems to only work when the internet is connected. The main modem is connected to the pc and the D link wireless router is connected from the modem,to the mac..So the mac is recieveing wireless..but technically it's not recieveing it at all.BEcause the internet only sometimes works on it if you're lucky.

It might be that D-link router. I know I had a D link and if you push to many files(traffic) on the wireless, it crashes. This would mean, when you Internet is working, the D-Link router is working fine. When the Internet is not working, this means the router is down. Giving you the illusion that you need to be online in order to transfer files. It still shows you as connected but the truth is the router is not working correctly. You IP address is still up and so on. I say go to the local computer store and purchase a Cross over Ethernet cord. It should not cost more than $10 bucks or so. Connect the iMac to the PC that way. This bypasses the router and gets you connected. It's also much faster for transferring the files.

Good luck.

What do you mean you likely already have one? Cross over cable is not the same as Ethernet patch cable (the blue wire that connects your modem to your router). The wiring inside the cables are aligned differently. Also, if you disconnect the modem from the router, this will not make it instantly work. If the router is bad(or gets bad after to much traffic), cutting of the internet portion won’t help. For god sake, just spend the $10 on a CROSS OVER cable and it will work.
