• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I have copied a QuickTime file onto multiple laptops and I'm getting this message upon opening:

"...can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer."

Apparently I have to set up my security preferences differently. Anyone have a quick fix or workaround?

That's the built in GateKeeper security which is preventing the installation. Just right click on the file and select install or open if you're sure it's OK. The other method requires going into System Preferences, Security & Privacy, and temporarily turning off GateKeeper which we do not recommend.

Thank you so much, it worked! What a relief!!
How come some of my laptops opened the file ok? Does that gatekeeper thing get set up on it's own randomly or did it come about due to my update from 10.6 to Yosemite?

As far as I know GateKeeper starts out with the same settings each time. Is it possible that you opened the Security settings once and changed them to complete an application installation? In that case the change you made is retained until it is changed again.
