Waiting for a mate . . .
Your Mac's Specs
21" iMac 2.9Ghz 16GB RAM - 10.11.3, iPhone6s & iPad Air 2 - iOS 9.2.1, ATV 4Th Gen tvOS, ATV3
If you did a erase and IF you havnt been using the HD the Geniuses @  might be able to recover lost files.

I dont like your chances though
There is data recovery software out there, but have never needed to use it so the name has passed me by. Someone will come up with it.
Good luck

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
I think it's Data Rescue that you're thinking of, but yes, I don't like his chances either.
The OP has erased the HD, and then installed a new OS, which means writing over the previous data. Chances are slim to none really!
Data recovery is a real hit and miss business, and in many cases, will cost a lot of money but yield no positive results.
Don't mean to sound harsh, but I hope this has been a lesson of how important keeping current backups is, especially when making major changes to your system, yet alone erasing the HD and installing a new OS.

I use a program called photorec (comes bundled with testdisk) it has an undelete option in it and although I have never tried it in Mac, it worked a treat on a windows machine, you can run it from a very small Slax install, booted from usb or CD.

A Mac is short for "Macintosh." It's not an acronym, thus it should not be capitalised.

To put it another way:
mac: a waterproof raincoat made of rubberized fabric
MAC: a data communication protocol sub-layer, also known as the Media Access Control
Mac: a brand name which covers several lines of personal computers designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc.

Ditto for iPod. :)

No problem. I include this information just FYI, not because I'm a capitalization nazi. :)

.... and a Big Mac does not refer to a 17" MBP, a 27"iMac, or a Mac Pro... it is just simply a burger (if you could call it that)! :p

There's also MAC tools, but for both the beauty line and the tools I don't think the word MAC, despite the capitalization, is an acronym. I think it's just a marketing affectation.

You know, like putting an "i" in front of everything ... how cheesy is THAT?? :)
