I have the first iPod made - the big white one. I'd like to sell it to a collector, but can't figure out how to wipe out all the info on it. All tips greatly appreciated. TIA

If you connect it to your Mac with the cable (and a USBC adapter), it should show up as an external drive.

I forgot the original iPod had a FireWire (FW) 400 connector. You will need a FW400 to FW800 adapter and the FW800 to USBC adapter.

Once you connect the iPod to your Mac, you can use Disk Utility to then erase the drive.

Good point and important detail.

Firewire Support: Sync & Charge
Details: The original iPod models are capable of charging and syncing using the onboard standard Firewire "400" port.

And it looks like replacement batteries are still available if it actually needs one:

Aha! I knew I needed something I didn't have! I have a drawer full of cables, but not the one I need. Thank you for explaining.
