Hi all,

I bought a refurb 13" MBP 3 days ago. Leaving aside the problems with migrating from my old 12" G4 Powerbook (I'm going to buy a FW400-800 cable) I'm having some serious problems.

First problem was editing system prefs, which would go 'not responding' often.

iTunes, iPhoto, Rockband etc will not open - get not responding. Similar for apps downloaded, e.g. Evernote. I thought, hmm, I'll try reinstalling the apps from the DVD, but instead I get a not responding from the DVD after it loads - installer and textedit (to read the 'how to install' file'). So basically I'm stuck, and I think this may be a duff MBP.

What do I do? Any tips on fixing it, or do I call Apple? I'm about 90 miles from the nearest Apple Store, and can't (and don't feel I should) take the time off. A bit annoyed, as I've been using Macs since 1994, but I guess there is always one!

All help or advice very gratefully received!

Welcome to our world and the forums.

1st you might want to repair disk permissions from the install disk

Hold down the 'c' key on boot up. Pick a language and from the installer window Utilities>disk utility In the left column click your HD and then the repair permissions down the bottom

Do that and post back.
Unlucky though to have problems like this being 3 days old :(

Hi Tattooed Mac! Thankyou so much for responding so quickly - I tried repairing permissions, and so far, it seems to have worked - the only test I've tried is by opening the applications that 'not responded' before, and they all open fine. It is a bit disturbing that this happened, however, so I will be keeping a close eye on it (and buying a FW400-800 cable so I can *finally* get my data across - ethernet will just not play!).
