I'm confused between the 4gb MacBook air with the new flash state drives or the MacBook pro with a normal hard drive. Is flash drive a newer and better thing or is it safe to buy a standard hard drive ( macbookpro) just trying to stay ahead of the game I guess. Thank you

Newer and faster, much faster access time in fact, but currently limited in size and expensive.
Hard drives are still the better otion for the next year or so I reckon.

Thanks for the feed back although what ever I get it has to last me 4-5 years so do I get the new stuff or stay with regular hard drives?

Yep, go with the biggest HD option you can afford. Upgrading later will be an option for sure, by which time prices will have come down considerably.

I bought the MBA 13 a few weeks back and although I don't regret it, you do pay a STEEP premium on flash right now. I "had to have" the MBA due to form factor considerations and I really liked the screen.

It is FAST compared to mechanical drives. But others commenting are right, if you have 4 year time horizon and don't mind the "bulk" of the Pro line, go ahead with a Pro and switch to solid state later.

I've read prices are supposed to drop dramatically on solid sate in late 2012 timeframe.
