Hi guys. I'm a bit of a lurker. I've researched this off and on. My iBook hard drive is pretty much shot.
Preceding this problem:
More research is mostly pointing to a bad hard drive. I purchased a new one today. Picked up a 160 GB Western Digital PATA 2.5" 5400 RPM Notebook Hard Drive for $50 brand new.
From what I can tell, this is the correct drive for my computer. I was going to this site for a walkthrough on replacing the drive. Seems thorough enough.
Anyone think it's something other than the drive? Any better ideas? Please let me have some input before I tear this thing apart. I realize this is the time to upgrade to a MBP, but I really want to get all debt paid off before I get myself something nice.
Sorry for being long winded. Thanks in advance guys.
Preceding this problem:
- iBook started getting super hot right around where the hard drive sits on the casing.
- In an attempt to do a software update for OSX, the software update started initializing. I get the rainbow wheel for a few minutes. Shortly after that, I get a message that the software update program has unexpectedly quit. Try a few times again, same thing. Reboot, try some more, same thing.
- Every so often, computer would freeze. I wouldn't be able to do anything and I would get a distinctive clicking sound from the area around the HDD. After rebooting, I would sometimes get a gray screen with a question mark.
- I ask a few friends and the ones that had that issue said it was a bad HDD and Apple replaced it. Clearly, I'm way outside of warranty.
- Problem seemed to have gone away. Running pretty well and a software update came up and it actually initialized.
- Felt confident and decided to go through with the update. Midway through the update, computer crashed.
- Upon rebooting back into the OS, the computer will go to the main desktop screen, but every program I open crashes. I also get some error messages. I don't remember them, but I would be more than happy to post them if you feel they are relevant.
