Hard disk space problems

Help. My iMac says the disk space is nearly full, and I only have iTunes, iPhoto and Mail on this computer.
Is there a way of finding out what is using up all the space?
Could one of these applications have duplicated itself?
There is no way I could fill up the computer with these items, but I can't find out what is using the space.
I currently have 1GB of free space left!

Download the free Disk InventoryX and run it to find out how the space is being utilized.

May be a dumb question, but have you ever emptied the trash? Deleting files does not free up space until the trash is emptied.

Also, are there any other accounts on the system? Do you have kids downloading video?

Mac applications take very little space; it's not like Windows. I'm guessing you have a ton of music and pictures filling things up. email can also get big if you never delete anything.

In the Finder, open a new window and then on the left under Places you should see the username. Click on that once, and then File-->Get Info (Command-I). It should pop open a window that says "Folder size" among other things. That's all your music and such under most normal setups.

Then click on the top left icon, which should be your hard drive. When you click on that, what folders and files do you see?

You can also go to Applications--> Utilities --> grab which will let you capture some screen shots to post which might help us see what's on your hard drive.
