Got Yosemite, now I can't burn CDs or empty trash

Good day. This is my first post on a forum not related to aviation or Corvettes.

I waited a month or so to download Yosemite on my 2-year old MacBookAir that had been trouble free......and then I downloaded Yosemite and lost the ability to burn CDs, which is essential to my magazine writing. I also cannot empty my trash.

Took MacBook to local Apple guru, and he installed a free CD burning program, but when I use that the photos on the CD cannot be viewed on any other computers.

Suggestions?

Hi Chappie,

It would help if you gave us some more information. Since this is an AIr, who makes the external burner? Also what is the burning software you are using? What format is it burning in?

Sorry about the skippy initial information. I'd been wanting to do this for weeks and was in a hurry.

Lisa- I'm using an Apple SuperDrive that I bought at the same time as the MacBook and using the burning software that was already installed on the computer. Thanks for the link about emptying trash. I'll take a look over the weekend.

Jake- I like you A-6 avatar. When I try to burn a CD I don't get an error message. When I attempt to burn something it all works fine until I hit "Burn" in the upper right hand corner. Prior to Yosemite I used to get a progress bar on the screen and would simply eject the CD when it was finished. Now with Yosemite I hit "Burn" and nothing happens. When I try to open the CD icon that comes up on the screen to see if the photos are there it gives me a message that I cannot open the folder because it is locked. To even eject the CD I have to "Force Quit" Finder.

Thanks for the help and patience. I was hoping that other folks would have this problem and Apple would release another fix.

Thanks for the avatar comment. Not many folks recognize them. I was aircrew in them for 15 years.

As for the burn issue, what product are you using? If you want to share with Windows folks, it needs to be burned in a format that is compatible. The default should be that compatible standard, but tell us the product and maybe we can tell you where to check.

Hello again. I got busy with my real job and the fun job with the magazine.

Lisa- I tried the directions in the link you posted, but I still have the same problem. I cannot empty my Trash. Also when I try to copy/paste photos from one folder to another, often times they will appear to copy, but they cannot be opened. All that remains is the "JPEG" logo, which cannot be deleted. This is extremely irritating!

Jake- I don't know what the name of this program that the local guy put on my MacBook, but I did see a drop down menu that had the following selections:

Mac (HFS+)
PC (Joilet)
Mac + PC
DVD (UDF)
Advanced...

That last selections opens a menu that looks to allow you to select all of the above. I just burned a DVD using "Mac + PC". I'll try it on my work PC tomorrow night to see if that did the trick.

Ok long list of questions but a simple answer.

There is a freeware burner for yosemite called Burn for mac it burns all sorts of music and games and even dvd's its much simpler to use and operate for beginners.

I also recommend getting a copy of toast titanium all though burn might work for your needs burn is dependent on your dvd burner in your mac which it might not detect.

Also Stay away from sony DVD+R Rewritable media its garbage and doesn't work well with mac os x.

Can you be more specific about your claim that you "can't empty the trash?" What -- specifically -- are you doing?

As for your SuperDrive, if it works with Burn or some other alternative program, then it should work with anything and the "local Apple guru" **did not fix the issue.** I would take it back to him (or preferably, someone smarter) and get it actually fixed.

As for CD formats, the PC (Joliet) is the "standard" for data CDs. Both Mac and PC can read them. (or should be able to)

Jake & chas_m: Ha-ha!! Burning the DVD on Mac + PC worked! I took it to work last night and there were all the photos! I'll keep in mind that Joilet can be viewed by Macs and PCs.

As for not emptying trash? Normally when I empty trash which is quite often (just anal retentive about it), I hear the little sound of paper being crumpled and everything in the Trash disappears. Post-Yosemite I hit "Empty Trash" and nothing happens. I once tried to empty it and let it for an hour. When I came back nothing had happened. Then if I try to shut the computer off, it won't allow me because it says Finder is still running. I have to "Force Quit" Finder in order to **** the computer off.
