I got a new HD after my original crashed. I got an 80 gig one, and under the macbook info area, it says Serial ATA capacity is 74.53 gigs. However, when I go to Mac HD, it says only 55 gigs avail. What gives? Does Leopard take up 20 gigs? I have NOTHING else on the computer.

Did you use your restore OSX DVD to reinstall? If so remember iLife takes quite a bit also. Garage band with the samples takes a bit all by itself.

20GB on a fresh machine with iLife installed? I can see how that would be plausible. Like travis said, Garageband alone takes up somewhere around 4GB. Throw in the extra languages and you've got another 3-4GB there. OS X itself also takes up quite a bit of room.

Get yourself a program called DiskInventoryX and have it scan your hard drive. It will give you a graphical representation of what files are taking up space on your drive. You should be able to pinpoint what is taking up all that space.

Thanks for the tips guys. I didnt do the restore, apple did it for me and I'm assuming that it must be the ilife stuff then. I was just confused as all heck, but it makes sense if those programs are really that big..

Thanks again!
