good uses for automator and terminal?

I want to learn to use my mac to its fullest potential, and it seems like automator and terminal are key programs of the OS that I hardly ever find myself using. The only thing I use automator for is renaming multiple files and though I went and learned a bit about terminal and command lines, I can never find much of a reason to use it. What are some good uses for these?
