All of which makes perfect sense, when you say it like that.

You have pointed out what makes both more or less worthless however. If what you say is true, and I do not doubt it, then maybe both should be turned off for good. That way each individual could simply concentrate on "helping at the moment" and no one would worry about how they stand or how they rank as part of the larger collective. Again, if they are not a good way to judge the helpfulness or accuracy of a person or what they post, then what purpose DO they serve other than to make peoples egos feel good?

Because it can be useful in some circumstances. However, the post count or rep level does not guarantee the poster is giving correct information, is knowledgeable, or is a positive part of this community. In the end, it's the quality of the post itself that needs to define those things.

My point is that people sometimes get an unhealthy obsession on something that really is not all that important. Rather than letting their ego or self-worth rise or fall on their rep points or "OMG I ROXORS LOL!L!L!L!L! I GOT 1000 POSTS", they should just concentrate on helping at that moment and being a positive influence on the community.

To be honest, I've seen people with little of either that are outstanding members, and I've seen those with alot of posts or alot of rep who are more damaging than their worth.

This is very true. I don't judge answers based on the posters rep or post count at all, I build up a mental picture of how helpful and knowledgeable people are by the content of their posts. But then I'm knowledgeable enough to be able to judge how good an answer is myself, whereas new users might not.

Post count is handy just to see how active people are, but ultimately rep and post count aren't particularly useful, IMO. I find the Member-of-the-Month thingie in peoples sigs to be more useful.

I agree. To be honest, I'm always amazed at how much emphasis is placed by some people on something in the end is so meaningless.

I agree, schweb. Isn't this the exact reason the rep system was taken away?

It is a good idea, but because of people's obsession with it (as you and schweb pointed out) It get's out of hand.

Maybe it would be better if all the newbies didn't know about the rep system.

Of course that wouldn't work, because then they would post threads asking about the green bars.

The rep system is working now, but I'm all for permenantly deleting it if it gets too out of hand again. If you post here enough, you don't need green bars to tell if a person is helpful, you should already know.

And if you think a post is great or outstanding, feel free to drop that person a PM, we all love getting PM's. :)

And that is why, in the end, the rep system is ultimately worthless.

I third that... or is it fourth that?
Either way, this thread has more or less served it purpose and really doesn't need to continue.
