Got my twin 2G G5 on Thursday, first time I powered up it went into take off mode with all fans blasting, I held the p[ower button down for 5 seconds (like it says to do in the manual, it's about the only **** thing in the manual!) and it rebooted fine.

Haven't switched it off since and don't intend to, I have 4 computers now and all run 24/7 (Linux, 98SE, iMac & PowerMac).

btw the Unreal 2004 demo really rocks on the G5, smooth as anything with a huge framerate, I just wish the keyboard wasn't so crap it really lets the machine down.

I had some major problems with my dual G5 as well right out of the box...i installed some stuff and rebooted... it really does sound like its going to explode (if you dont own one, you have no idea how loud this really is)....and nearly half the keys on my keyboard did nothing but open the CD Rom drive...it was really freaky.... i called mac, they didnt know anything lol....

i took it upon myself to just format it on my own... from september to now, its quiet as a baby and runs sooo well (has never crashed...) so before you do something drastic, like bring it back to mac...try putting in the dvd rom startup disk they guve you, and hold C (i think) when you start up, and it will bring you to a screen where you can step by step remove the old OS.... format / partition... whatever you wish... and install os x again...

and ya, the fans do have a lot to do with the temperature of the room..cuz if you think about it...their purpose is to keep the processors under a certain temperature.... if the room is at 100 degrees, your processor(s) are already at a temperature that they should be running at... so when they are running, they will be even hotter... i dont know much about macintosh processor temperature limits... but on most pc's you run about 110 degrees normally....and around 145-150 is the pc warning / automatic shut down... if the room temperature is too high, your computer will have cooling problems

which brings me to wonder... what about all us college students... if this spring is really hot... with no air conditioning......i wonder what a 90+ degree room will do to my purdy G5 :(

I'm having the same problems with my g5... it worked fine for the first two/three months.. now I'm having difficulties starting up. Yesterday was the first time I had the REALLY LOUD FAN PROBLEM... and my room was a normal temperature... cold actually. The REALLY LOUD FAN PROBLEM has nothing to do with the temperature of the room.

I'm just about to start editing a rather large project... and now my machine won't boot...

What are the different ways to start/restart a G5...

yeah really, apple shouldn't have released the G5 yet, like another poster mentioned, the G5 is a substandard product. I've owned 2 macs in the past, G4 desktops, 1st generation and 2nd generation and never had problems...

AndyP, how did you get them to replace your whole G5? I'm going to bring my system in to the Apple store again... after it's fixed, I'm selling this ***** on ebay and getting a G4 powerbook... I need to get a laptop anyway.

Well dang. Hopefully apple will fix this fast. I'm sure the updates will make a difference.....this also gets into the point that other G5 updates will be postponed....like the iMac and Powerbooks.....this sounds like it could effect a lot of things...or maybe they already have it under control, and will fix things.

I have this problem as well... I took it to the genius bar at the apple store and they took it in for service and ended up replacing the whole logic board. Now, I still have the problem, only I can get my computer started after about 7-10 hard shutdowns/restarts and not 20 like last time! There were also others at the Apple store with the same problem (in San Francisco and in Denver), so it seems like its becoming a major issue. Some say its a faulty video card. I don't know, but I'm about ready to sell this **** thing. Dual 2ghz piece of ****. I'm going to bring it back in and see if I can get the whole thing replaced.

It seems to read my problem! Nothing different, but the same tragedy. I even tried to change the video card with no results... Sometime I thing the machine need to burn up to see the apple on the screen! If you find the solution of the problem, please let me understand it (even if you decide to put the g5 by the window)

I don't think anyone knows what causes this. Everytime I've called Apple they tell me that they have never heard of it before. Well, obviously other people are having the same problems. I've noticed that once in a while it helps to reset the PMU on the motherboard. But this doesn't work all the time.

Out of the box day 1 back in november when I got my system, the **** thing froze as I went to enter my name into the system in order to set it all up.

I've had programs crash maybe... i dunno 5 or 10 times since novemeber, but what I am getting is whole system crashes. The system haults, and I have to power it down. It does this as often as you could expect a typical program to have a random error and want to quit. There's no rhyme or reason to it, which lead me to believe it was logic board/cpu related from the get go...

it could be anything from scroling in finder, to being up and running for days straight, and then I zoomed in, with photoshop.

I've done IT for years with PC's so I was able to some self-diagnosis in my time, and of course about 10 tech complaint calls to apple regarding the same issue. I had replaced the third party ram i bought from crucial, but that didn't fix the problem.

Therefore, on wednesday Apple is sending someone out to my house to bring me a new motherboard and 2 new cpu's to hopefully fix the problem. It only took them 5 months to acknowledge it was their hardware.

This is my first Apple, and while not a great experience, I know how **** can happen with hardware; however, this won't make me like Apple any less. It's just more of a pain than i wanted for the $$$$$ i spent on the G5 2.0

I'm sure everyone would like to know that when Apple came out to replace my logic board and 2 cpu's that everything worked out fine.

Well I'd like to tell you that it would; however, the logic board was dead out of the box. I'm going on motherboard number 3. Hopefully it's like they say, 3rd time's the charm =\.
