I have a G4 Tower running at 10.3 , Processor 733MHz Power PC , 512MB SDRAM (yea I know its mega old:().

I have had it for AGES, and am new to the whole upgrading thing. I am looking to upgrade to 10.5. Is there any way of getting 10.5 on my G4 Tower, and whats my starting point, and does it involve taking my tower to a computer shop/expert?

Any help appreciated.

Leopard requires 867 MHz or faster, but there is a way round that. Read this article about system requirements Mac OS X Leopard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and XPostFacto.

To go from Panther 10.3.x to Leopard will require the retail (black colored) version of Leopard. Frankly though, your G4 will struggle, even with maximum RAM (1.5 Gb). Mactracker states maximum OS for your G4 as Tiger.

A PS to your Edit: No, you don't need to take your Mac to an Apple tech, you can do the OS installation yourself - bearing in mind the information provided above - it's not a difficult process.

Hi Hughvane,

Would it be worth getting Tiger on my g4 tower? Do you know where I can get Tiger 10.4?

prices for both tiger and leopard on web sale sites are getting extortionate at the moment

expect to pay between $50 to $100, unless you get lucky

Your G4 will operate Tiger, but it'll never be fast, the 733 processor will see to that. Take a look in M-F Buy/Sell/Trade > Calling All Older OS Disks - there may be a Tiger OS available there, but both it and Leopard are in very high demand.

You'll nearly always get a cheaper option with Windows, and you'll also get the problems associated with that OS. This is one reason why Macs are more expensive - "you gets what you pays for!".

g4's are not that old and the 733MHZ speed is good for web browsing and not many other things and yes you can get leopard on a 733 MHZ you just have to have another mac with a power pc g4 but it has to be the 1 GHZ g4 processor
