Uh hi there. Here's my predicament: Two years ago we need a new computer, I said Lets get a mac, my sister said no I want windows. Since she's older we got a dell. Since I cant really afford a new mac, I was wondering how a B&W g3, like 400 mhz, 256 ram would compare to my Dell Pentium 4 2ghz, 256 ram. I dont use it for gaming or anything, just music, AIM, typing papers, and going online. Would it be significantly slower or bearable? Thanks.

eh... you might as well get an emac.. those are pretty cheap now, and are the best deals..

however, a B&W is not slow.. its not fast either. If you run OSX on it, max out the ram if its not already (been a while since i delt with those machines.)

Thanks, I was just suggesting a G3 because they are getting sorta cheap on eBay, though that's probably not the best place to buy a computer :-\. eMacs seem pretty cool. Would the low end $799 one be fine for what I do? Anyone else think I can manage with a G3 without wanting to bust something?

For what you listed, an eMac would be very sweet, but go with no less then 256 megs RAM, 384 is what I suggest. If money is a concern, see the refurbs, same backing :)

The Dell you have is obviously a newer system than a G3 PM, but for what you'd be using it for, I think the G3 would work perfectly well. I'd probably go with more RAM than 256 MB, but other than that, it will be a nice choice. I'm actually going to try to find a G3 PowerMac All-In-One on eBay soon, to use for basically the same things you mentioned.

Awesome, thanks. I know a lot of g3's on there come with liek 10 gig hrd drive and around 348 ram, which everyone seems to agree would be good. This brings me to three more questions:
1. How hard is it to find a decently priced monitor to match a BW g3?
2. If I do get a g3, are there any mp3 players other than itunes that are aviable on both (mac and win)
3. Is it easy to network and Mac OS X and win XP computer together? Can I stream my existing mp3's off my pc?

Srry if Im asking too many questions, just trying to get informed. Thaknks

1. Not hard at all. I'd prefer an Apple Studio Display (older CRT versions can be had for great prices on eBay), but that's just me.

2. iTunes is great, but you can find many others at sites like http://versiontracker.com and http://macupdate.com. I'm not sure how many of them can be used on Windows machines as well, but out of curiosity, why would you need to?

3. Yes, OS X is quite easy to network with XP, and you shouldn't have any problem accessing the MP3's stored on the PC.

You can download Windows Media Player from microsoft for free if you like. Just type in "Mactopia" in the search bar in the microsoft website, and it should be one of the first few to pop up.

Hey there....I actually run an older G3 Beige Server that was running with 64MB RAM and a G3 300. Since then, I put a total of 512MB RAM in and installed OS 10.2.8. I then OverClocked (Which is Quite easy but not 100% garaunteed to work) from a 67Mhz system bus and Processor running at 300Mhz to a 70Mhz system bus running at 350. You may also want to check out a G4 Cube. These are pretty cool in their own right and have alot of upgrade routes to venture. OS X on the Beige runs pretty well.
