Format a Hard Drive

I am trying to reformat the hard drive of my 2007 iMac in order to donate it and am having a tough time figuring out how to do it. I have tried the disk utility program but it won't allow me to erase the hard drive. Any thoughts?

What OS are you running?

Either boot from the install DVD and go to Utilities > Disk utility > Erase, or similar in Recovery in OS X.7 or later. You cannot erase or repair a disk you are booted from.
