folders and applications disappear

hello - it happened now several times that folders and applications disappear from either the desktop or the application folder. I could restore them each time from my backup drive but now it happened to my finance that it wasn't even on the latest backups of the drive and she had to go back to an earlier version (and do the work again...). We both have leopard, I have a 15inch duel powerbook 2008 and she has a iBook 2009. any help is greatly appreciated. thank you.

And which application/s are disappearing? and what sort of Leopard 10.5.8? Did u use Spotlight to try and find the missing data?
