Flat Panel iMac 2002 CD to DVD Upgrade question

Good afternoon,

I have a the following Flat Panel iMac. (see info below).

It came with a Sony CD-R/RW Drive Unit, Model number CRX170E (Feb 2002).

My question is: Can I put a DVD Optical Drive into this model Flat Panel iMac ? And if so, what model / year does the DVD Optical Drive have to be ?

Can the DVD Optical Drive be a Pioneer Code DVR-109 (April 2005), or does it have to be an earlier model ?

Your advice in respect of this question will be very much appreciated.

That machine uses a PATA connection for drives, so any DVD type drive that is PATA SHOULD work. I've put newer DVD drives in my G4 Power Macs with different levels of success. The newer ones have been more successful...

The best way to see if a drive works is to just install it and try it. Those machines are a bit of a task to get into, but you're not really going to know otherwise.

Fortunately the flat panels are much more easier to work than later models. Have a read of this from fixit. Any good quality superdrive should work. Personally always use Pioneer and the model DVR-104 works in flat panels.

Well, bearing in mind that finding PATA parts may be a bit of a challenge these days -- everything's been on SATA for quite a long time now ...

Any Pioner up to the DVR-109 is IDE or PATA in the new language as they mean the same thing. Have a read of this showing models and (old) prices:-

I put the DVR 109 in and it not only fit but worked brilliantly ! Thanks all for your advice
