Finder reconnecting to network computer on every visit

Is there any way to disable this behavior?

I have a windows-based file server on my network that I access very frequently. What's really annoying about Finder right now is that every time I click on the file server in the left-side panel, I have to wait ~8 seconds for the list of shares to show up. Also, if I go into a share and then back up out of it, I have to again wait ~8 seconds to see the list of shares.

8 seconds might not sound like much, but it really drives me crazy after a while.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Edit: I've noticed that if I keep one Finder open with the list of shares, and browse with another Finder window, it doesn't reload the list of shares every time I visit the file server. I guess this is a viable workaround, but it clutters up my desktop and I have to have a Finder window open for every network computer I want convenient access to...

Put the share in you side bar or dock. It will load slow the first time but only once. No Desktop clutter. I prefer to not show any drives on my desktop.

CMD+C brings you to all of them.

Every new network share will be slow to mount unless they are shares from the same computer.

I tried dragging network shares into my Places list, but Finder doesn't seem to let me.

Then I stumbled on a ridiculous hack :D. I first create an empty folder and drag that folder into my Places list. Then I 'mount_smbfs' the share onto the empty folder. Relaunch Finder and the empty folder in Places turns into the network share. So far everything is as expected, but it turns out that after working w/ the share for a while, it actually becomes a permanent link to the network share. I.E. if I umount the share or restart the computer, and then click on the share in Places, it automatically remounts it under /Volumes. I think it even retains the options I originally passed to mount_smbfs.

I haven't completely figured out what parts of "working w/ the share" causes it to become permanent, but it's something to the effect of browsing to the share via the mount point, relaunching Finder, clicking on the share in Places, ejecting the share, remounting via mount_smbfs, relanching Finder, clicking on the share in Places, ejecting the share, and clicking on the share again.

Now, is there a better way to put a network share in the Places list...

How do I put a share onto the Dock? It doesn't seem to let me drag it from Finder to the Dock.

I'm satisfied right now though with the shares in my Places list.

Thanks!

The Dock has two sides. The side the trash is on allows adding folders and the side the Finder is on is for adding files. Drag the network mount to the Dock on the Trash side.

A common practice is to create a folder in your Documents (anywhere really) and then create aliases of network mounts found in /Volumes. Copy the aliases to the folder you just created. Then put the newly created network mounts aliases folder in the Dock.
