You might want to re-think MacUpdate. It hasn't been generally considered to be safe for years now.

Has MacUpdate fallen to the adware plague? | Malwarebytes Labs
MacUpdate has succumbed to what has ruined most other download aggregation sites: adware distribution.blog.malwarebytes.com
Wow...!!! Talk about quoting a post from the dead past member thread!!!
Anyway, as to the safety of downloads from MacUpdate, I nor any of the local Mac users I know have not had any trouble with it but the user should certainly read any installer notice very carefully to confirm what might be getting installed.
The worst contaminated software I ever came across and downloaded was from one of the "Legit" Open-source software sites. Another one contained a copy of the invasive, dubious MacKeeper!!!
MacUpdate.com was seemingly providing some corrupted software for download for a short time, but they clamped down and cleaned things up and even provided an apology disclosure notice of the situation. That was quite a while ago.
Anyway, I still suggest downloading from the developer's site if and whenever possible, but do use MacUpdate to read the user's comments being mindful of any possible bogus comments and reviews.
