You can use this website (Mac2Sell - Guide to used Mac, iPad, iPhone & iPod - Evaluation - Argus Mac, iPod, iPad, iPhone Occasion) to price out your Mac and see what it's worth. I'm guessing the Buy/Sell/Trade section of this forum is to actually selling it - not so much to get a feeling for what you can get for it.

frankly this site is useless. Last year I sold a mac book pro and it told me the price was $800 when in fact I sold it for $1500 and its giving a silly price.

Well, things are always worth as much as somebody is trying to pay for it. I found the site has given me a fair estimate in the past (so I don't think it's useless) and I'd double check there before making a purchase for a used Mac. Hence I wouldn't have paid $1500 for something that should be closer to 800.

I'm sure the website doesn't factor in certain features, upgrades the owner would have added.

I'm sure you must have an idea what you want for your MBP - if you really want to sell it start advertising and people will tell you if it's too much.

I also find Mac2Sell to be a useful site. It is basically for getting a "ballpark" estimate. I have many many examples of when Mac2Sell what right on the money (or pretty close).

There are always exceptions to everything in life. If you sold a MacBook Pro for $1500..and Mac2Sell said it was worth approx. $800...then somebody REALLY got "hosed" on this deal.

The Mac2Sell values also assume that a buyer is knowledgeable regarding the value of a used computer they're buying. If a buyer does not know that a specific used computer is worth $800...and a seller says that it's worth $1500...then the buyer may have to trust what the seller is telling them.

If a seller is selling an $800 used computer for $1500 (I can almost guarantee you that Mac2Sell values are not this inaccurate)...guess who is taking advantage of whom???

Of course a buyer should make the effort to research the value of a computer (or any item) before buying as well.

Since this topic has been brought up...I feel it necessary to comment on the original post as well. Telling us that the "feeler" computer in this thread originally cost $2500...means absolutely nothing. I have a Macintosh computer from 1991 that originally cost $10,000-$12,000 thousand dollars. This has no real bearing on it's current value.

Anybody can go to Apple.com...and see that better 15" Apple laptops can be purchased now for less than $2500 (two models available, $1799 & $2199):

And for what it's worth...Mac2Sell.com says the MacBook Pro for sale in this thread is worth about $1260 (not factoring in the $150 originally paid for the anti-glare display).

Compare the Mac2Sell value of $1260 to the BETTER 15" MacBook Pros that can be purchased from Apple (brand new with 12 months of Applecare)...and the $1260 value is probably not too inaccurate. Plus there's no way to really recoup all (or any) of the $150 paid for the anti-glare display.

The bottom line is:

- telling us that the computer cost $2500 originally...
- Mac2Sell says that the computer is worth $1260
- knowing that a better 15" MacBook Pro can be purchased for $1799 new
- and saying the Mac2Sell values are "useless"...

Is probably a bit unfair. Could you get slightly more than $1260 for this computer??...maybe. If you get $1300 or $1350...does that really make Mac2Sell values "useless"??...I think not!

And FINALLY...here's the exact same computer that's for sale in this thread (link below)...available from the Apple Store refurbished (no anti-glare display)...for $1319:

So again...Mac2Sell says this computer is worth $1260...and Apple is selling it refurbished for $1319. Looking at these two values...I would say that Mac2Sell is actually being very generous!!! Since for only $59 more...someone get's the same computer from Apple (basically like brand new with 12 months of Applecare).

Personally (if Apple is selling this computer for $1319) I wouldn't pay more than probably $1100-1150 for it.
