Can anyone please tell me what memory the Monterey upgrade will take up over the Big Sur?

Do you mean RAM or storage? If you are that worried about storage on the internal drive, you probably don't have enough free.

You shouldn't need any more RAM for Monterey than the amount that you found adequate for Big Sur.

Newer versions of the Mac OS, as they have appeared for about the past decade, have become less RAM hungry rather than more. Apple has developed very advanced memory management, including memory compression. Extremely few users should need more than 8 GB of RAM.

Hello, I guess from what you both say, there is no problem with Ram or Memory. It is just that I object to adding all that fancy stuff that I will never need on Monterey.

From what I'm reading sounds like what you're concerned about is storage space (RAM & "memory" are the same thing..."memory" is not storage space).

Here's what Apple has to say:

I have recently updated to Monterey from Big Sur and I am bound to say that the fancy stuff you are expecting from Monterey is pretty much already there in your installation of Big Sur!

I agree with Peter (pine man). Monterey seems like a polished version of Big Sur with a few, genuinely useful additional features.

Hello both.Pigoo thanks for the link. I didn't find that when I searched. I just didn't want my computer suddenly slowing down because of the size of the upgrade.
"pine man", thanks for the information. I love the last bit:)

That is pretty much reinforced with these other articles:

That may be a concern for Windows users, not for Macintosh users.

If anything, new major versions of the Mac OS provide BETTER performance than previous versions. Especially if you do a clean install.

Hello, I guess from what you both say, there is no problem with Ram or Memory. It is just that I object to adding all that fancy stuff that I will never need on Monterey.

To more precisely answer your question.... It is recommended that you have at least 20GB of free space on your hard drive to upgrade to Monterey.

However, it's also important to know and to keep track of the fact that you need to keep about 20% of your hard drive free for your computer to work properly/reliably (whether you have a rotating disk hard drive, or a solid state hard drive.)

See:

(Item number 5 and Note number 1)

Your Mac uses that 20% of space for things like scratch space, databases, caches, virtual memory, etc.

Hi Andy. Thanks for the reply. I know that my Mac will run Monterey but I shall wait for a short while to hear if there are any problems with it. Regards.

There are always a number of problems with any major new version of the Mac OS. That's why experts always recommend that you wait for at least the point-two version before updating. Here is a page listing some Monterey issues:

Thanks Randy B. When I eventually upgrade, I will note all the fixes you refer to.

Here is a page listing some Monterey issues:

The current list of macOS Monterey problems includes severe battery drain, Wi-Fi issues, UI lag, crashes, issues with first and third-party apps, installation issues, Bluetooth problems, and more.

Some of these problems are brand new, others have carried over from previous version(s) of macOS like macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.

That's rather disappointing to read what they said highlighted here in bold for those that might be going that route.

At least 3 or more macOS versions later, and some problems still not fixed. That sure doesn't sound like the Apple of old. :(

Not one of those "problems" are actually bugs. Most are user/configuration issues. Click bait.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Brian
Brian, just to add to that can I just say, I'm running Monterey on a 2015 MacBook Pro and my impression is that it runs smoother and if anything faster then Big Sur.
As for the "stuff" I agree with what's already been said, you already have most of the "stuff" in Big Sur except for a few handy refinements and additions such as Focus (already on iOS 15) which means when I put my iPhone into Do Not Disturb mode my MBP does the same and Passwords a new User Interface for Key Chain Access that works like a simple Password manager (very handy if you are a Safari user).
