I decided to take a look at this thread since it's up to over 20 posts for a question I thought would be answered in a half dozen posts.

Reading all the comments and suggestions, my opinion is that the drive is defective.
I have a similar tray-loading Asus drive I bought years ago - it works by just plugging it into a USB port and inserting a disk.
All possible scenarios why the disk may not show up on the Mac have been covered as far as I see - drive being upside down is not really possible because it's a tray-loading, not slot-loading drive.
The OP tried different CD's and DVD's - the make is "unbranded" - pretty much just leaves that the drive is defective in my opinion.
