External Disk Format

I have an external drive and was going to swap some files around from OSX to Windows8.1 and was wondering is there any kind of format that works best between the two?

There is only one format that works between the two without using special drivers, and that is FAT. (MS DOS) Keep in mind that FAT-32 has a max single file size of around 4 GB.
