I'm thinking of dumping Windows 8.1 and buying an iMac. I have been using Windows for more than 15yrs and have accumulated 300 gigs or so downloaded music which is stored on a Toshiba hard drive. Is there a hard drive I could buy that I could use on both machines without reformatting each time? Preferably one I could purchase here in the UK.

Welcome to the forums.
If you buy a hard drive you can format it as FAT32, meaning that both Windows and OS X can read and write to it. Only drawback is that each individual file can be maximum 4 GB in size.
If you have larger files, you need to format the drive to NTFS and you will need a driver on OSX to be able to write to the disk ( Reading NTFS is not a problem on OS X )

Cheers ... McBie
