Welcome to our forums.

Do you have Microsoft Office installed on your MacBook Air? Or, the Apple "Numbers" program? There are also other free office programs which can open and edit MS Excel files.

Well as stated the version is 8 years old so if you are running say macOS Sierra it may no longer be compatible. Did it work on the MBA before or have you upgraded your OS on the MBA recently?

Did you have to activate using the 25 digit keyword code? Whenever I use Migration Assistant I always have to re-activate Office and change my home page from apple.com

You haven't provided us with any other information as to which MBA you have and what version of OS X it's running.

MS Office 2008 is compatible with the latest version of OS X = macOS Sierra, and Office 2008 did not require activation. So, if your Excel files won't open, either MS Office Excel program is corrupt or your Excel spreadsheets are corrupt. Sorry, but that's about all we can tell you for now.

We know it is part of Office, but do you have Office 2008 and the activation code, usually adhered to the rear of the CD case?

@Harry:

The US version of Office 2008 does not have an activation code on the back of the case. Instead there are three serial numbers included in the case booklet along with the CD. Office 2008 in the US did not require activation. How do I know... because I owned a copy. Activation was started with Office 2011.

The problem is solved. I just turned the Mac off and later turned it on, and exel opened perfectly!!
Thank to all who offered help and advice!

That should always be step 1
Then, it depends on your "techie quotient" -that is, how confident/ knowledgeable you are with computers.
Step 2 could be posting on a forum.

I understand Harry. That's why I specifically mentioned the US version. MS for years has had a different set of rules and EULA for its US software versions from that of other areas of the world.
