I have had a Western Digital 120 GB hard drive for a while now, but haven't used it much. The other day I found it, and formatted it to FAT32. I copied some movies over to free up space on my Mac Mini's HDD. After a bit, some of them started failing, saying some of the file could not be read or written, then the drive would appear empty and refuse to eject. I would unplug it, click ok at the error message, and remount it to see the partial file there. I retried several times, but it's spotty and only works maybe a quarter of the time. Any help is greatly appreciated. :)

EDIT: I forgot to mention that it's using USB, and I've already tried different cable/port combinations. Also the drive sometimes sounds a bit strange when it fails, but I've watched several of the movies that were successfully copied to the drive, and they play flawlessly.

It seems that the Mac is encountering read errors when trying to read the data from the external drive. This can either be due to disk damage or due to a problem with the actual drive itself. It is possible that the external hard drive has bad sectors on it.

Can you get a Console report on the problem and post it here?

Sure. Although, like I said, I could watch movies that successfully were transferred to the external hard drive without a problem. It was just tough to get them there. I don't know if that's significant.

Sorry, I tried this alot, so there's quite a few repeats in the log. Also, MILLICAN120 is the name of the external HDD.

Okay, using Disk Utility, check the Info about your external HD file system. Is it FAT32 or NTFS, maybe HFS+? I note right at the end of the console report that MS DOS appears. That indicates that the EHD is formatted NTFS and that's why it was so difficult getting the movies etc on to it. I'm surprised you managed it. Usually MacOS cannot write to NTFS, but it can read it, which may be why you could watch movies okay from your EHD.

It says "MS-DOS File System (FAT32)" on the disk info. I formatted it with my mac, so I figured it would work fine. Should I reformat into something more UNIX friendly?

Well, I formatted the drive to HFS+ and it worked great, but after doing some research I discovered it would be easiest for Windows compatibility to use FAT32, so I formatted it back (lol). I guess something went wrong when I formatted it the first time or something? It seems to be working great now. :)

Well scratch that. I got over 6 GB of data on there, but then any files I tried to put on would fail. What you said about bad sectors is starting to sound pretty accurate right now. I can't think of another reason. :( I guess I'll be going hard drive shopping, lol.
