I'm trying to encrypt a USB thumb drive on my Mac. But when I try I get the error message "A GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning scheme is required." I've looked at the instructions here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4946118?tstart=0. But they don't work. There is no "Partition" button in Disk Utility for me. Can someone give me working instructions on how to encrypt a thumb drive? My version is OS X Yosemite 10.10.5.
1 - It's not gonna work that way, you need format your drive before the process and it should be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled) " and then create fixed space encrypted folder inside. if you are using internal built in Encryption feature.
2 - Insert your flash drive into a USB port on your Mac. Copy all files on the drive and paste them into your Desktop. The USB drive has to be empty during the encryption process. All files can simply be copied back onto it after the completion of the encryption process.
3 - Once the flash drive is empty, open Disk Utility, which is found under Applications in your Finder menu.
4 - You will see a window with a list of devices towards the left portion of it. Choose your flash drive from the list.
5 - Go to the Erase tab and click on Format to open the corresponding menu. From the choices, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled). You will be asked for a name, which you can freely choose.
Here is the complete process if you want to check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1w-ze19hzks and here is the resource https://www.beencrypted.com/how-to-encrypt-a-flash-drive/
