Hi guys,
against my better judgement i upgraded to Yosemite. i avoided mavericks, and should have stayed that way! its not to bad, but the issue I'm having is imbedded audio files in websites won't play. it shows up okay and lets me press play, but nothing actually plays. if i download the file i can play it fine. worked perfectly before upgrading to Yosemite.

I've seen a few different issues with sound in Yosemite. Mine was a similar issue.

Several of them have been repaired simply by booting the machine into safe mode.

To boot to safe mode, press the shift key down and hold it as soon as you hear the start up chime - you can release it when you see the apple. It can take a few minutes to boot. Once in safe mode, then restart it normally and check it out.

All websites - incl'g youtube? Or which ones?

With sound issues, next would be to do an "SMC reset".
You should get 1st or 2nd hit with google of that phrase on how to do it.

its actually a work site thats causing me headaches. we have imbedded .wav files which i need to listen to.
youtube and that works fine, as do the test links from apple to check quicktime.
i haven't found any other webpages that have imbedded .wav files to check, but If i use my windows VM with internet explorer it works fine.
i'll try the SMC reset and get back.

First, it's "embedded"..:)

Now, you didn't mention what browser you are using? And what extensions/plugins you have running?

Imbed, embed, both are acceptable. Check it at Dictionary.com if you don't believe me.

It's strange. Audio plays in Safari for me, but I have not checked to see if a specific .wav file will do so. But so far, nowhere I've been has failed to play audio.

Could not find a file on that page that wouldn't play here - out of about 30 I tried.

I don't think anyone here has a clue what you are talking about!

i think the others did. essentially when you go to certain pages they have imbedded audio files that play in the browser. my work uses such imbedded files. there are different formats of wav files that can be played. my browser use to play all types. after upgrading from mountain lion to yosemite, its stopped playing a-law and u-law formats.

I tested the various WAV files I found on the test page and they all played fine, but I do have a left over Flip4Mac WMV Player and Perian system preference panes/plug-ins still active (the latter being the updated open-source version) and the VLC plug-in which is part of the VLC install.

Certainly I would suggest downloading VLC and using it to play the files if all else fails.
