Got on the computer this morning and selected get mail(road runner account). It said downloading 23 messages and then the spinning beach ball appeared. It then said 57 messages and the ball continued spinning. Forty five minutes later and it was still spinning and would not let me do anything. I could not close the email nor start anything as the ball continued to spin. Went to sleep after 5 minutes but when I woke it up again the ball was still spinning. I finally turned the power off and restarted the computer and everything loaded ok and it seems to be working properly. How should I have handled this problem?

Hi and welcome.

I can only tell you how I might have handled the situation. In a sense, it's what you did, but arguably in a more organised manner;)

I would have very early on have used Force Quit to get out of Mail. Then re-opened Mail. If all well; great. If the same or similar happened, I'd again used Force Quit, then rebooted the Mac. It's always a surprise to find how often a reboot solves the problem.

Turning the power off should be a last resort.

I'm sure you know, but if you want details on *** to use Force Quit, including the keyboard shortcut for this, just ask.

New to the Mac since Mar, still getting used to the different terminology so I am asking how to use "force quit". Thank you
