Up until recently, whenever I got an email an alert would appear on the upper right corner, and stay there.

Now it won't show. I have to click on the date and time to make it appear.

I've been through all possible settings, but I can't figure out how to make these alerts show on the desktop automatically.

Any ideas?

Try this:

Go into System Settings > Notifications > then scroll down till you see "Mail" and Click on it.

You will see this:

Arrange the options to suit your needs.

For as far as I can remember I've always had this set on Alerts. I repeatedly turned these settings on and off while restarting the mac, and even ditched the Notifications preferences, it made no difference. I just can't get the notifications to appear on the desktop without having to click on the date/time.
This just happened a week ago. I can't figure out what's going on.

Well, I recognise that my telling you that my Notifications appear as I want them with my Settings as above ;) ;)

What I would do in your situation is:

Turn Off everything on the above window starting at the Bottom Badge Application option and work upwards finishing with turning Off "Allow Notifications".

Then Reboot the Mac; then return to System Settings and go back to that same Mail window. Turn On Allow Applications and choose Alerts and then work downwards turning On what you want.

That usually works. Please post back.

Thanks Ian. Before I got this message, I trashed the Dock preferences and now it looks like the problem is solved. Thanks for you help.
