Emac: My emac won't start up properly...

Everytime I switch my emac on now it seems to just stay on a blue screen.

I switch it on then it goes to the screen with the apple logo and loading wheel... does this longer than usual, moments later the blue screen appears with a loading wheel.

Any clues as to whats happened?

UPDATE:

I put my osx disks in and launched disk utility.
It recognises my HD, when I click repair it repairs it but the same thing happens.
I tried to erase my HD but it wouldn't do it, same happens when I try to partition it.

Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
