DVD Recorders and my iMac

I'm thinking about purchasing a DVD Recorder for my TV. I want one that I can also connect to my iMac, download the video, edit it in iMovie and then record to DVD using iDVD. Is this possible, and if so, can anyone reference me to a particular product.

That's a good question. I am starting to look at external DVD burners, but somewhere I have read that external DVD burners don't work very well with Apple hardware. I hope this is not true.
