dvd drive region free?

Do you get better playback when you rip them? I'm just curious because I only have a 30GB drive in my iBook, so I don't like using up all my space to try these things out. I'd sometimes do it if the playback was better than what VLC gives when playing from a disc.

theres no gain in playback terms and your hard drive will be stuffed
full very quickly. from my experience there is no easy way round the drive region 'problem' on macs. vlc did not work for me either as it still compares
discs and drive settings, just like dvd player.

mac the ripper can work I still say the best solution is two macs one for region one and one for region two. LOL

Give VLC another go:
- Set Mac to "Ignore" any inserted DVD in the System Preferences.
- Insert DVD & Launch VLC.
- Change VLC "coreaudio" preference setting to 1 in VLC Preferences.
- Select "Open Disk" from under the "File Menu". If this does now work, use "Open VIDEO_TS folder" option.

if you click the little triangle next to output modules and then check the advanced box at the bottom left corner it'll show up, but i don't see where you set it to 1 or anything. i just set it to CoreAudio Output and that's all there is.

now ive got dvd player hogging every time i put in a dvd
despite unchecking the box in prefs

how do u get it to do nothin when u insert a dvd

check ignore when a dvd is inserted
set vlc to core audio output

insert dvd
open disc

works a treat no need for two macs after all

And these sentiments are particularly strong from our US cousins--the home of the PC, Windows and Microsoft. I believe you started off with a slightly anti mac tone.

Another case of Apple's not being quite so customer friendly?"

AptMunich replied saying "Same way there is a truckload of garbage for PC's (viruses, spyware, malware, etc) and none for macs. (This is also helped by the fact that OS X is just securer than windows)."

This is 100% true. The first sentence is proven fact. The second was more of an opinion, but one that is generally shared by knowledgeable computer users. OS X IS more secure than Windows.

We weren't Windows bashing. I get pissed whenever I see that, or mac bashing, because typically I see equal amounts of both of it. It's crap.

Jonster, I havn't taken the time to read through all the suggestions, so I apologize. But, have you tried going into system preferences, then to CDs and DVDs, and making sure it's set to have the right program play DVDs? Also, is there anything in the DVD Player or VLC player preferences related to this. Did Brendan67's walkthrough above at least get the region stuff to work for you?

Well I'm not too sure now. If you've done everything then it should be working by now. All I can suggest is starting from scratch.
Make sure you've got the latest version of VLC, double check your coreaudio setting is at '1' in VLC, and tripple check that the 'CD's & DVD's preferences' in 'system preferences' is set to [ignore] for the option "When you insert a video DVD".

If that is all set up then it should be working. You just go to VLC and hit cmd+d to open your dvd.

Ususually this is because there aren't as many folks out there that can or are willing to go through the trouble of writing sofware for OSX to remove region coding from DVD drives.

As stated above. It's got nothing to do with Apple.

i have the latest version of vlc viewer and you can't set coreaudio to anything other than itself. like, you can't set it to 1. so i just set it to CoreAudio and then try to open it and when i try to open it, i ge an error. here's a screenshot of the error:

hmm... I see a few differences. I'll take some screenshots too and attach them. I just realised how small I made them but you should be able to make out what I'm talking about

The first one is just to clear up the coreaudio thing - I've marked in red the bit that should be set to 1.

The second and third one are there because I noticed your open video was labeled as the DVD file 'VIDEO_TS.VOB'. If you are opening the disc in VLC it should load the dvd title instead of individual files. The second picture show the address that loads from my dvd drive and the third picture just shows the loaded title name instead of a filename.

The only other noticable diffierence is that you use Tiger, while I am using Panther.

I'm using VLC 0.8.2 under Tiger and I get the coreaudio options... worked fine for me.

okay, well, no matter what i do, it's still not working. i set all of that right and when i click to open the dvd, i get DIR_EN_GREY, which is the dvd title, then it just says VLC media player again. am i screwed?
