Download movie from DVR to mac mini

How can I download movies from my DVR to a mac mini? I have an ADVC Converter, if that is helpful. I don't want to try anything that riskes losing material from my DVR.

That is going to depend a bit on which DVR model you have and which Mac Mini. I've done it via a firewire connection before but that can be cumbersome. What you are able to record may also be affected by whether the content is copy-protected.

Like Slydude says, we need to know the DVR model if you want more help (so we can look at the manual). Especially helpful is whether you have a USB port on yours.

At this time I decided to abandon the project. Thanks to Slydude for his thoughtful response.
