• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I have some archival footage I downloaded off the internet for an audio project. I'm working with someone who wants to make them short clips and only knows how to use iMovie.

If a person imports an MP4 file to iMovie and plays with it there, does iMovie change the file at all when it imports it? Is there any loss of audio quality?

I've done this several times. As for the sound - I did not see any changes, the quality remains the same.
But with the image quality is not so clear. For the first time everything was great for me, the quality remained the same. But all the following cases are not as successful. Unintelligible noises appeared on the video (

Same happened with me. The quality of image was not that of original image. It had some changes which led the image quality go bad.
