This is a very ancient video file format, When videos online used MPEG, MOV and AVI, RealVideo was in, and was used in every connection on the internet, Such as Email, FTP, P2P and even the World Wide Web. the format was used in many websites for download since the late 1990's.
The format was used for news broadcasts and film trailers, but it was used in any general internet video besides of streaming media.
It was used for Full episodes of TV series.
They were many, many, many, many, many websites that used the format a lot. since people used common formats such as MPEG.
When DivX came, It was used in every website for good and high quality including Email, FTP servers and P2P networks.
RealVideo was still in use, until it was used less and less and stopped being used altogether.
Does anyone RealVideo back then?

Sure, anyone using the Web in the late 90's into early 2000's came across this along with ShockWave, Flex, too much Flash and other technologies that are no longer used,

Real is still alive, for winOS only.

Yes it's still alive, but no one uses RealVideo anymore and was replaced with DivX. It's in winOS only, but if anyone has any older versions of Realplayer on Mac or Windows, Good luck with that, because they've downloaded videos on various websites before.

I remember it but didn't realize it was still alive on any platform.

I'm slightly out of my depth here; but if someone had videos on their Window's PC with that format, would it not be possible to convert that format to one suitable for macOS? Or am I talking rubbish as usual :)

Ian, most video formats can be converted to other formats. The appeal of RealVideo was that it had built in DRM within it. So a lot of "streaming" websites back in the day used it since they could control distribution. To that end, there was no "official" way of converting a Real video to a MP4 or MOV or other generic format for ready consumption, but that didn't stop folks. ?

Not streaming sites per se, but general user-generated online videos that are downloadable, a lot of 2000's websites do that.
