Hi

When I insert the camera SD Card into my MBP (Yosemite) some times I am able to delete the photos (files) from the card and on other occasions this is not available and the photos have to be deleted via the camera a rather slow process and with no chance of recovery. The process appears to me to be random, but I assume some sort of flag is set such that delete facility (Send to Trash) is blocked.

Deleting any data from a card should be left to the user to decide. Am I missing something here?

Appreciate any comments / advice

Thanks, Bryn

I can only relate my experience with SD cards. I have a 2013 27" iMac with a SDXC card slot. What I have found is that not all SD cards are created equal. I have purchased inexpensive cards and the more expensive type. I have found inexpensive SD cards are hit and miss when trying to do any kind of file maintenance with my Mac. The several better cards that I own work without a problem. I don't know what brand or type of SD card you're using but like I stated, the better cards work OK for me while the cheaper ones do not.

Hi chscag

Thanks for your comments. Agree with your comments re cheaper SD cards. In this case I am using a ScanDisk Ultra II - 2Gb on an MBP (Mid 2012).

I have just tried the old approach connecting the camera via the USB and what do you know 'Move to Trash' has become available! So it looks as though there is an issue with the MBP reader contacts - Ah well not too big an issue !!

Cheers , Bryn

While most have no issues deleting files, some cheeper ones may and this is also a sign it may be failing.

I recommend ONLY deleting files with the Camera. I also recommend doing a low level format when it is swapped from one camera to the next. If you are using a Canon this is a very simple task.

I also recommend Samsung Pro SD Cards, I have the older blue ones and the newer white ones and love them. Super fast, temperature resistant, salt water resistant, magnetic field resistant and very durable as well. I have a review on my youtube channel if you are interested.

I have used all manner of CF and SD cards over the years and have had very few problems. Keep in mind that I have shot well more than 300,000 digital photos and wore out three Canon EOS cameras under warranty when I was a full-time motorsports photographer.

I never, ever, deleted images on my computer. I download the files onto my computer, back them up and put my card back in rotation for use in camera. When I put a card back in my camera I reformat it every time. No exceptions.

My preferred cards are Lexar and Sandisk, but I have had very good luck with off-brand cheap cards too. Just reformat 'em every time and you'll sleep well.

I have a friend who is a professional photographer and he recommends reformatting the SD card every time he puts it back in his camera. So I agree with what exodist says.:D

Solid Advice...

I have a few 32GB Kingstons I keep around here also. Mainly use in my G12 these days. But nice to have them when out shooting and fill my other 32's up..

Sometimes I delete images from SD card but it don't go onto the trash folder. Though I don't know the reason why they are not going there. In that case what should I do?

Are you leaving the card attached and then emptying the Trash? Removing the card leaves images there and removes them from Trash.
