Can someone please tell me the best way to defend my system from a DDOS attack? He said something in a chatroom last night about 10k "packets" etc. He has my IP.

He also mentioned "internet stressor"

Hello - first, please provide a much more thorough description of your setup: 1) What Mac computer are you using (model/year); 2) What OS X is installed; and 3) What 'chatroom' are you talking about - assume a website?

Second, do you even know what a DDOS is? If not, quote below from HERE - also take a look at this Malware Guide - you do not have a Trojan horse on your Mac computer (assume since no details are given?).

Finally, how do you know 'he' has your IP address? Let me stop there and allow you to reply - Dave

DDOS is short for Distributed Denial of Service.

DDOS is a type of DOS attack where multiple compromised systems -- which are usually infected with a Trojan -- are used to target a single system causing a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. Victims of a DDoS attack consist of both the end targeted system and all systems maliciously used and controlled by the hacker in the distributed attack.

I would say don't hang out where folks like this hang out. And I guess...don't tick folks like this off enough...that they would go to the trouble of DDOSing someone.

I hardly think that if someone remained mostly anonymous in these chatrooms...and don't get into flamewars...this dude wouldn't even know someone exists...let alone go to the trouble of DDOSing them.

For the record and the benefit of others: your router's firewall is there for this exact purpose. Barring a deliberate, focussed and concentrated attack on you for reasons you will likely know, this is a non-issue if you are behind a router firewall. If you're not for some reason, OS X has a less-effective but still adequate software firewall you can turn on.

just for the record, i encountered a creep thru my online podcast that i have been doing for years...and yes, it was a ddos, i since then purchsed a physical firewall
