Following here because I have the same issue. But I have a further question. My husband and I share the same Apple ID. He owns it. This all worked perfectly until one day we decided the change our monograms and /or contact photos. After we did that we started showing up always as either both my husband. So when I was texting my brother it showed up as if my husband was texting my brother. So confusing. And in group chats we both showed up as my husband. So basically I disappeared as an individual phone number. Even though we have separate phones and separate numbers. (To complicate matters even more I have two digital SIM cards on my phone. One with my US # and one with my international phone #. So my phone has actually two phone numbers at once). How can we make the two phones appear as two people when calling and texting ? Thank you for any advice.

Totally agree, I can't understand why you would share an ID if you have separate devices, it is as it cost anything, and things will be simpler. If you want to share resources then family sharing it the way forward.

Separate Apple/iCloud ID along with Family Sharing are the way to go forward, to keep everyone involved sane.

Firstly, a warm welcome to Mac-Forums.

Your post is interesting because that is exactly how my wife and I started out some many years ago.

With careful pre-planning and complex adjustments to the settings, it was quite possible for she and I to text, phone etc, as separate individuals.

But time moved on and common sense intruded and my wife then created her own Apple ID (or rather I did for her) and there was no looking back - and that is what you need to do. (As mentioned above).

Once you have separate IDs, it is very easy to share things like: Photos, Calendars, even music I think.

That way, you get the best of both worlds: each person has their own things and also share things common to you both.

Go for it!

Ian

PS Bob beat me to it. My typing is crass and dead slow!!

People used to do this to keep from having to purchase the same app multiple times. If, for example, several family members wanted/needed the same paid app they had to pay for it multiple times. The solution was to use one Apple ID as a kind of family ID

The problem with this arrangement is that it creates a situation like @AmyG123456 is experiencing.

Just adding another reinforcing comment to support this suggestion and adding a welcome to Mac-Forums.

Yep, I agree with all the above. I'd suggest you have a free 5GB storage plan and your husband have iCloud +. That way you can share storage and apps.
Your challenge will be seperating your individual data. Your documents, photos, music, messages, reminders ect, are all effectively stored in your husband's account.

I don't think your iPhone will be a big problem. You will need to erase it as you would for a new user then login with your own (new) Apple ID and setup with your two SIM cards as your numbers (assuming they are in your name).

Obviously there is a bit of work and inconvenience in creating and seperating the two accounts but it's never been adviseable to share one Apple ID and nowadays, thanks to increasing security measures it's become almost unworkable.
