I am trying to find an easy way to convert an aduio story from MPEG4 to AIFF. All of the ways I have seen to do this appear to be on line? Has anyone done this with a freebe downloaded application?

I have Audacity, but it won't take MPEG4 files and it's driven me up the wall finding how to instal the add on to take that format o_O So if anybody has a single sylable as to how to do that it would be even better. Here's hoping?

Hey John:

Try the "Adapter.app" it's free. Not sure it will work but maybe you can perform some magic on it. :)

X Lossless Decoder (XLD). Hands down, the best audio transcoder for macOS.
Being an audio-only application, can it extract the audio track from a video file? The OP says his source file is MPEG4 - a video format. The OP needs to extract its audio track to AIFF.

...Unless he's actually talking about an M4A file?

Now I am getting my brain cell in a big mix? It is MPEG-4, but audio

I had a quick try with that X Lossless Decoder and it seems to work at converting to WAV files, so when I get a bit of time I will investigate further. Ta folks.

If it's essential to have the result in AIFF, you could always load the WAVs into Audacity then export from there as AIFF. A bit laborious, but it'll get you there!

MPEG4 is a spec that covers audio and video. M4A is just Apple's naming convention for MPEG4 audio files while M4V is their naming convention for MPEG4 video files. Simple saying one has an MPEG4 (or even just MP4) file doesn't really make it clear if it's audio or video.

EDIT: I should add that you otherwise have a good point. XLD can't handle video files, and I did just assume the file he had was audio (although as it turns out, it was).

Or, in XLD, just change the output format to AIFF.

Ok, I'm trying to attach a screen cap of the preference setting, but "something went wrong". So... just open up XLD's preferences and under the General tab, do the obvious.

Or,
