Continuous Beep at startup

My early 2008 Mac Pro is giving me fits. As soon as I hit the power button, it is making a continuous beep. The sound is very similar to the sound a battery makes when the power is out. High pitched and nonstop.

Any suggestions?

Have you checked the memory in your Mac Pro? It could also be other things like component failure. Perhaps one of our Mac Pro users can give you some better insight as to what's happening. Hang on for more replies.

Is this computer "new to you"…or have you owned it for a while…and has worked fine up to now?

It's a continuous beep, no breaks, just one long tone.

I've had the computer since 2008, bought brand new from Apple.

About a month ago, I was having kernel panics, and posted the report and was told it was a graphics card issue (upgraded from Nvidea GE Force 8800 to Nvidea Quadro fx 5600 which was an option when I originally purchased it). Once I replaced that it had been working fine for the past few weeks, then more trouble started...

1. the screen would lose contact - just go black and say monitor going to power saving mode which forced me to have to hard restart.
2. I had another error report that I posted and someone responded that it looks like a graphics issue
3. Then when I tried to restart, the machine went into continual restart - chime wait 1-2 seconds and chime again, which forced me to restart
4. Now I've had the machine off for a few days and went to power it on tonight and had the continual tone.

I may need to pay the 3rd party apple repair to diagnose, but would rather try and figure it out myself and save the money to put towards the repair.

Also, the RAM failed over the summer and was recently replaced under warranty - OWC.

Ok…thanks for the info. Sometimes folks purchase a computer used that already has a problem…then post here thinking we have a "magic wand" to turn a non-working $200 computer...into a 100% working $1000 computer!lol

Too bad you didn't post here (since you are a new member)…so we may come to a different conclusion.

A long continuous beep or tone is kind of unusual. Usually the problem is a set of beeps. If you look at this Apple document:

Mac computers: About startup tones

A long continuous tone is a EFI ROM problem. As you can see from the Apple document…to update/restore the EFI ROM on some Mac computers from 2008 and before…it needs to the done with the discs that came with it.

So the good thing is (if this is the problem)…you bought this computer new…thus you should still have the gray discs that came with it to do this procedure.

another nvidia failure look at his report he tripped a processor panic do a favor disconnect the monitor and remove the graphics card and hit the power button if the beep goes away its the graphics card if the beep doesn't its the processor has died if its multi beeps after removing the graphics card its memory.

see the error you got the portion of it you are looking for is this.

NVDRESMAN is the text that controls the graphics card if your graphics card is on the same bus as another controller on the main board you cause a kernel panic of which all the other files failed to load which is exactly what you got.

Thanks! I bought the graphics card used as it is really difficult to find a new one, and actually have a replacement on the way. It is supposed to be here on Saturday so maybe I will try it then.

If I pull the graphics card and start, I assume it won't do any damage to my machine, it just won't let me see anything? Correct?

Correct…no problems. At least not beyond the problem already present.

Are you 100% sure your old 8800 video card is bad? If not…you could always put the 8800 card back in…and see what happens.

About as sure as I can be. Before it died, I had some full screen pixelation and kept having kernel panics at start-up on the grey screen. Ran full diagnostics and couldn't find anything, reset all the PRAM, SMC, couldn't boot in safe mode, couldn't boot from disk. So by process of elimination and some other people reading the kernel panic, went with a graphics card.

When I replaced the graphics card, it started right away.

All that being said, I'm 99% sure the old one is dead, but I guess I could try it.

The reason why I mentioned if the old graphics card was known 100% bad. If the new graphics card is 100% good…and if it's only been a month…why is there another problem so quickly…AND it possibly being a video card problem again (for the 2nd time)??

Two video cards going bad in one month is pretty unusual…unless your computer has a cooling problem…and the video cards are getting "fried" from too much heat.

And if it's not the videos cards (either one)…then it's got to be something else (which a 3rd video card is not going to cure).

You mentioned having a ram problem (and OWC replaced the ram). Ram can be a big problem area as well. Is all the ram new…or just some?

Just throwing a bunch of ideas/theories your way. As soon as you start swapping parts…you may be able to confirm or eliminate some of the theories.

The first graphics card (8800GT) was the original card in the machine. It died after 6 1/2+ years. The second (Quadro fx 5600) was a used card that was the high end option when I originally bought the machine so I am assuming that one is in the neighborhood of 5 years old. Given the age of my computer, its been difficult to get confirmation if any of the new cards will work in it, so I decided to take a chance on a used one, which is why I think they both may have failed. Fortunately, the recent one has a 30 day warranty that I can use to get a replacement.

I think I have decided to take my machine into the shop....If I can stabilize it, I think I can get another 2-3 years out of it, but need to figure out fully what is going on.

I'll try and post back when I get an update, just in case anyone is curious. In the meantime, if you have any thoughts, please keep them coming. It is great to get responses. They are all very helpful.

hmmm....
so before I left out this morning to take my machine in for a repair, I pulled the extra hard drives out and plugged the monitor into another outlet and tried to start it and it came right up with no beeps, etc.

These symptoms are all very new to me, but do you think there is a possibility that maybe there wasn't enough power getting to the machine to power it up? Possibly the circuit or my surge protector was overloaded and that is what was prohibiting it from starting and also causing it to drop the monitor at times?

Also, when it came back up this morning, it looks like some of my latest issues may be a result of Parallels. The latest error seems to implicate a BSD.....WindowServer. Here is the report from this morning. Can you discern anything from it?? Thanks.

Hi! I have been reading the post and figured you were getting great advise so I didn't post. One thing you have posted now says you pulled your hard drives and the beeping stopped.

Just a thought - I had a hard drive that was a data drive start to die that caused all kinds of weird issues. I replaced it and all was good. Another thought..... when you removed the hard drives you reduced the power load on your power supply. Could that be going bad? If you have a weak power supply this can create all kinds of problems.

A good repair shop can test both the hard drives and the power supply to determine if all is good. I would suggest if you take it in, take the hard drives to be tested. They can test them without harming them. I know you can check using disk utility but sometimes it misses the problem.

I repair PC's and am just learning about Mac's so I could be all wrong but it sounds so similar to some PC issues I have encountered and what I am suggesting are simple checks.

BSD and Windowserver are part of OS X, not Parallels.
To me, this: panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f80907fc7): NVRM[0/2:0:0]: Read Error 0x00009410: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0xa2000000
might indicate a memory problem? Or memory on the graphics card? Anyone else want to chime in?

After reading the comments about removing the hard drives (and the beeping stopped)…what Lisa mentioned in the quote above…is exactly what I was going to say as well.

Maybe the power supply is on it's last legs…and not able to output enough "juice" to power a fully loaded system (lots of ram, video card, multiple HD's, etc.). This definitely can happen with older power supplies.

Any thoughts on what the WindowServer is referring to in my error report?

You kinda are doing the best anyone can do if the problem truly is a weak power supply. You've reduced the load on the power supply by removing some or all of the hard drives…and then just putting one back. The proof of this is that the beeping/screeching stopped.

Sure you could fully load things again by putting all of the HD's back in…but then you will add more load…and you very well could blow the power supply completely this time around. The only other way to test things would be to get a good replacement power supply & install it.

And in case you didn't know. Video cards can be real "energy hogs"…and the energy required by the different video cards you've had installed in your Mac Pro could have played a part in things as well (confusion).

I've had power supplies "blow" right as I've been sitting next to the computer using it. Sometimes you hear the sound you heard (continuous screeching sound)…then a loud [size=+1]"POP"[/size]…and then you usually smell a nasty "electrical smoke" odor.

If we are correct…and the problem is a weak power supply. It could go "kaput" at anytime. So you can either keep using it as is…or start looking for a replacement power supply.

Not sure if people can recommend businesses or not on the forum, but was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on where to get a legitimate power supply or with a 6 1/2 year machine, am I relegated to what I can find - ebay, etc.
