Please see Post # 7 in this thread. If you are not using a "converter", it will not work. Adapters alone will not work.

Thunderbolt or Mini Display Port

I have a 13 MBP - with a mini-display port. Bought the laptop from a friend. Do I have to get a mini-display port cable or can I just go with a thunderbolt cable (better prepared for the future)? Do they even sell mini-display cable's anymore? Thoughts?

Thanks

I've got an early 08 Macbook Pro (this one) and am looking to connect it to my HDTV (it's an LG42LH3000, the manual can be had here). Before I buy any cables I just wanted to check what I need. As far as I can tell I just need a DVI to HDMI cable and a jack to RCA for audio, would I be right in thinking this?

DVI to HDMI must use HDMI/DVI In - port # 1
You will not use an RCA cable - you will use a stereo mini-plug cable (3.5mm) and must use the port indicated in the diagram below

For those lucky enough to have new MBP's and an ATV3 the mirroring function works quite well as my friend demonstrated for me this weekend now I have equipment envy.

Yeh, I realised that after I had a look at the back of the tv and looked at the manual again, thanks for pointing that out though.

Running Lion.

I should get the necessary cables in the next couple of days so hopefully it will all work.

a little help needed

Hello

I hate to jump on this thread as well, but it has been extremely helpful. I was able to find out what I needed to purchase in advance. I have a 2008 MacBook, and I am running Snow Leopard. I have recently had a need to stream some video from my macbook on to my tv.

I bought these two pieces last week...

Amazon.com: HDE White Mini Display Port to HDMI Cable/Adapter (6 Feet / 1.8M): Electronics

Amazon.com: 6FT 3.5mm Mini Plug to RCA Hook Computer To Stereo 6 FT: Electronics

When they came in today, I hooked them right up to see if I could go ahead and get things working. I have an open HDMI and audio video plug on the left of my LG set, so I think that works perfectly. I am getting video without any problems, but I cannot get the audio to work. When I check my audio output, it is showing up as "headphone port". Did I buy the wrong cord, or is there something else I am doing wrong?

Here is what the set up looks like:

Thanks for any help guys!

While there must be some, I am not aware of a TV that allows you to plug the audio into the side jacks and have it work with the HDMI. Those audio ports on the side are for the S-video and composite inputs, not the HDMI.

I believe LG has been using a 3.5mm stereo mini-plug for the audio input that will work with HDMI for several years - and you will have only one (1) HDMI port that will work with it. See post # 584 above - that is an LG and typical for their TVs. You will need to look on the back of your TV or open up the owners manual to verify which ports you must use to get a separate audio working with HDMI.

I think that's it

Thanks guys. I do see a similar looking port above the red and white audio ports that would where the male to male audio cable would go.

I think that's the next attempt I need to make.

If it's on the side panel and not the back panel - it is likely not going to work.
The ports you're looking for will be labeled as "DVI" in - both the audio and video ports.

thanks again

Thanks again for the response.

You were right. When I looked closer, I noticed the side jack was simply labeled h/p, so I took a picture of the jack on the back of the set.

Is this the right area that I need to hook up the cable?

Thanks again.

Connect MBP Retina to OLD TV

Hi all,

This thread is awesome, except that my feeble uneducated-in-electronics brain can't sift through ALL the various permutations of what I actually need, so I figured I'd throw in the towel and ask specifically. My apologies if this has been asked and answered a hundred times.

I have:
A brand new, Macbook Pro Retina 15" (it only has an HDMI port besides the Thunderbolt)
An OLD (non-HD) TV with only Yellow/Red/White RCA inputs

I want to be able to watch a movie on my TV instead of my MBP.

I also have a Mini-Display Port/Thunderbold-to-VGA adapter I bought from Monoprice (to be able to run a projector). (I also have some various RCA cables, like a mini-RCA to 2-prong standard, etc.)

I'm confused as to whether I need a converter, which cables, can I get sound, etc. etc.?

Specifics for this, please?

Thanks,

Mark

I have not looked at the latest model Macs in depth yet. I keep waiting for Apple to eliminate the possibility of using a mdp to vga adapter.

Yep, wanting to go to a composite input, you will need a converter.

If your projector is working using that adapter, you can connect that adapter to a converter box. I'd go with this one at monoprice.
You'll use the yellow cable for the video from the converter to the TV.

Check the bottom of the page - you'll also need one of those stereo mini-plug to RCA to go from the headphone jack on your MBP to the red/white audio plugs for the sound.
