Connect to external display

When i connect the powerbook to a external display! i wonder that can i set higher resolutions? My monitor supports 1280 x 1024. Or it just only at 1024 x 768 pixels.
And one more question: does it support panning display?

What powerbook are you using and what type of monitor are you connected to

I have my 867 powerbook hooked up to a 17" LCD with panning and my res set at 1280x1024.

Go to Applications/System Preferences and click Displays at the top
Display is where you set the resolutions
Arrangement is where you set the panning so the mouse moves smooothly
