Configuring Ichat

Hi all
New mac user here. For chatting purposes I really would like to move away from AOL and use mac's ichat. I tried to configure it and when my "buddies" are online the light appears green. Though when he sent me an IM it didnt appear. Did I make a mistake configuring it?

Welcome to Mac-Forums, John. Maybe you could check this iChat FAQ and see if you have properly set it up.

I'm a complete dummy about networking stuff so sorry I can't be of more help. I hope that website answers your question, though. :girl:
