compatible displays for use with ibook/powerbook

I am looking for general advice on screens/displays that i can use with my ibook. i have taken to using it in the office, and would like to connect an additional screen. Alas, all displays available here (fairly new standard 17'' IBM and Compaq) don't seem to be compatible, I cannot get the mac to detect them properly.
