Hello.

heres the deal. I was given a 333 rev A iMac with os8.5 on it. it works fine, except the cdrom. I can't get anything to happen there.

heres the REAL problem. I can turn a PC inside out with my eyes closed. I've been building, fixing and troubleshooting PC hardware for the last 10 years...

this is my first mac.... ever....

I found the drive utility, its actually shows my cd/dvd rom drive and my hard drive, but i can't get any cds to work, almost like there are no drivers loaded.... so i check the extensions (right??) and there is no cd driver in there (shouldn't there be an apple cd / dvd driver there??)

anyways, i have tried it with the original iMac 24x cdrom and a spare pc dvdrom (it plugged in fine at least...)

I would really really like to get this working, as i am not willing to spend any money on it, but want a mac to play with!

what do i try next???!!

thanks!

Kevin

I have the same problem with one exception. The drive recognizes purchased CDs but not CDs that I burn myself.

I tried using this file, "iMac CD Update 2.0.smi" which Apple claims to fix a vibration problem on CDs that are not properly balanced but it is not recognized on my Mac OS 9.2.2 system. It may work on your older system.

Look for it on the Apple Software Updates site.

I'm guessing you don't have the original disks then? I can't remember ALL of the extensions needed, but there needs to be one with the name ISO 9660 (I think that's the number); that's the one that allows the Mac to recognize music CD's. I'll have to look up any other stuff after work.

is there a way for someone to email me the files needed? I should be able to get the mac online pretty easily (it was on earlier) I will double check the exact version OS.

thanks!
