• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I am trying to capture dv from Panasonic dv caméra to my iMac through the Thunderbolt port. My dv cable plugs in to the caméra and the other 8 pin connects
to the Thunderbolt cable which plugs in to the Thunderbolt port on the iMac. Al running Macos-Big Sur. However camera is not recognised. Have followed
YouTube vidéos but they worked ok. Is it a cable fault or a faulty Thunderbolt port. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

It could be either cable, or the port(s). Did you try other ports? When you come back, give the full specs of each device Mac, macOS, video camera brand and mode. Be as specific with everything, because we won't know, and we will have to ask more questions.

Tried both Thunderbolt ports. Am running MacOs-Big Sur on 2014 IMac 8 gig ram 1 tb drive. Am running dual boot of Windows 19, Camera is a Panasonic NV-DS5. Camera works in playback mode.
Did capture on old pc running windows 7/Vista. Cable has dv port on one end to the camera and the other end has a 800 connector which plugs in to the Apple FireWire cable which plugs in to the Thunderbolt port. Is there anyway to reset/activate Thunderbolt ports or are the active all the time. Thanks for your help.

I was able to do this with my 2015 iMac and was able to capture things successfully. I wasn't using a DV camera file but I was using a set top box to capture some unprotected content. Unfortunately, a lot of the software that could do it relied on QuickTime 6 or 7 and a few of the codecs available at the time along with a series of additions that were called FFMPG.

The other codecs may not have been necessary. I needed them to deal with MPEG 2 Files.

I remember using MPEG Streamclip, and VLC although I was never a huge fan of VLC for this. There was another program that read devices on the Firewire bus. I think it was intended for developers but was fairly easy to remember.

I try to do some digging and see what I can find out.
