Wow jonzjob you sure have had your problems with BT Net email and I assure you you're not alone. I think without exception we have all had a very similar if not identical problem with Mail and adding third party accounts.
Although you seem to have conquered that issue for the moment let me say my most successful method was to set up the account at the providers website changing the password if necessary which you did.
Delete the account from Apple Mail on my Mac then re add it using the manual rather than the auto setup.
It's also a good practice to copy and paste your password from the providers website when changing the password which I believe you did.
As for your Ethernet issue, well I think Jimmysb has given you the only workable solution, how you achieve it...well? Run it in the guttering, suspend it on a support cable, under the floor, believe me as an ex Telecom (now Telstra) linesman there's always a way.
